I was trolling for trout and I notice my trolling speed change....it got slower. After taking my boat out of water, I had fishing line caught in my prop. I took the prop off and removed the string....is there any long term damage I should look out for?

Re: Fishing Line caught in prop

On smaller engines there is sometimes what is called a line cutter--but it never works. The only thing that it could possibly do is to wear the prop shaft seal. And that is only if you get a lot behind the prop. If it isn't leaking, no problem.

You think you had problems? I hooked up a crab trap line while in the Chesapeake. It stalled the engine. It was so tight I had to be towed in and then I needed to get out of the boat to remove the prop. It was a pin drive prop and the line was so tightly wound behind the prop that I needed to hammer out the pin.

Being that you noticed the speed change you should be okay. My mechanic told me to pull my prop monthly to check for wrapped fishing line so I don't ruin the seals. Now it's part of my monthly cleaning routine and also give the prop shaft a fresh coat of grease when putting everything back together.
