Fishing line taking out Alpha drive?

Hi,

My 86 Chris Craft Scorpion 210 LTD stopped moving forward yesterday and I dropped it off at the repair shop. I just heard back from them and the story is that fishing line got wrapped around the prop seal damaging the seal and allowing all the gear oil to drain out. Bottom line is that the top half of the drive is trashed, with the lower showing normal wear and tear. In my estimation I should replace the entire drive as the rest of the boat is in good shape and I repowered 3 years ago.

I have a call into Progressive to see if I am covered in any way. Should I go used, rebuilt? I am not near the boat- any idea of the gear ratio? I have found a few used 1.98 ratio units in the area.

How's the winnie? Are you the only guy on the lake? have it over at faye's?
If insurance will cover it then have yours rebuilt... if they won't see if they'll order you and sei drive.

Hi,

It is at Independent marine in Moultonborough. I will have to wait until Friday to hear from Progressive but frankly I am not holding out too much hope- I have a feeling they will say it was not an instant failure (or some other insurance speak!!)

How are the SEI drives? I poked around online- the warranty is certainly great as are the prices.

It is a bit quite on the lake this year, luckily there was a jetskier out there to tow me in!!

the sei drives aren't bad for the money... especially since your not in salt.

What they want for rebuilding the upper?

almost 2G for the upper but the lower is original and is showing wear too. 3G to do it all.

The SEI drive is looking good right about now.

Be careful of the gear ratio you get if buying used.The 1:98-1 are for a 4cyl
You need a 1:50-1 for a V-8Jerry
