I just recieved a new prop from I boats A Solas Amita 3 part # 1511-153-21. 15 3/10 X 21p I ts going on a 1972 Mercruiser 120, the origional prop is a 15 1/4 X21p. The Solas is much deeper and contacts my trim tab anode, I know this can be fixed by changing to an ofset one. The big problem is the depth of the hub that slides on the spline. The Solas is 4 inches deep and the Merc prop is 3.5 inches deep so the brass washer won't reach the splines with the Solas. What do you do about this. I used the cross reference section in the prop catalog to find the prop.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks Glen

I believe you are going to need the solas thrust washer ( #metw). You can order it right at iboats!!

It is slightly thinner allowing the castle washer to catch the splines at the end of the shaft.

Thanks, I will call I Boats today. You would think they would tell you this when you order the prop, or maybe include it along with the castle nut and lock.

Re: Fit problem on Solas Amita 3

So I contacted Iboats and all they could tell me is, it is the right listing for the application, and gave me a tech # for Solas. I called and talked with a fellow there and he said that as long as the prop goes into the exhaust hub to prevent exhaust leaking , and the nut goes on far enough for the fiber portion to lock there is no problem. The splines in the outer brass washer don't have to reach the splines on the prop shaft. He said there should not even be splines in the washer as they get calls on this all the time. Does this sound right to everyone. What is the point of the locking washer if it ties to a brass locking washer that can rotate???
Thanks Glen

The hub should have a castle shaped top. Then you install the locking washer, making certain that the locking tabs do not yet touch the hub and that it will spin freely. Then install the nut. You may have to hold the locking washer up against the nut(nut fitting inside the hex depression of the washer)and hand tighten until the nut and washer begin to snug up to the hub. At this point tighten the nut to the required torque specs. You will then need to bend three of the fingers on the locking washer down in between the castles of the hub. Good to go.

Thanks for the reply, So then I won't have to worry about the splines in the caslte washer not catching the splines on the end of the prop shaft?

Correct. The splines of the hub will mesh with the splines on the shaft. The hub will most likely, and should, extend beyond the splines on the shaft, allowing the nut to tighten fully.
