I know this is the Mercury forum, but since I've owned Mercury V6's for years I wanted to get the opinion of people here that I trust along with feedback from Evenrude people.

I'm looking at a boat powered by a 2000 225HP Evenrude with EFI. I know nothing about Evenrude and would like to get some opinions on them.

Thanks for any feedback.

That is not EFI. It is DFI, the Ficht system.

Maybe the worst engine OMC ever made.

Please take the advice of this forum. These aren't biased opinions, only facts. The FICHT has major powerhead trouble which obviously lead to costly repairs. Converse with any marine mechanic and 99 percent will tell you to start looking elsewhere.

The E-TEC engine now produced by OMC/Bombardier is by far a more reliable and well-put-together unit than the Ill-Fated Ficht.

The 2000 Ficht that the OP is looking at is not even close to the E-TEC of today. His was in the final years for OMC because of Ficht. Then it moved on to BRP, and BRP had to deal with all the warranty claims as part of the buyout of OMC. Lots of Ficht owners really unhappy about how that turned out also.
Light a fire to a large pile of $100 bills, you will get the same lost feeling as owning that motor.

Man, I own a 2000 Wellcraft Coastal 290 with 2 Evinrude Fichts and so far they have been nothing but problems.... If you do end up getting this MAKE SURE they have the updated engine management system. It will save you a lot of time and money. This is the problem I am currently dealing with right now. Also if it has been operated in salt water and/or you plan on operating it in salt water BE SURE to flush the engines out if the ECU's are water cooled,(there are air cooled models) because they tend to get fouled up with salt and whatnot, essentially overheating the computers and creating a hard fault. If you get that hard fault you will need to get the diagnostic equipment to clear the code so you can run the engine again.
Personally I think that te Evinrude Fichts (mainly the early years) are ****. If they are updated and well maintained, I say go with it, but if not I say save yourself the heartache and keep shopping.
