Has anybody fitted a normal external type automotive regulator in line with the battery being charged,if so, do you have the wiring diagram.
The charging voltage on my YAMAHA 55EL tends to charge at about 15 volts at WOT.And about 13.5 volts at lower RPM (idle to about 3500 rpm.)

If their alt. works like most outboard alt. you can't use automotive, you will need a reg. that bleeds part of the voltage to ground. (OMC-MERCURY)most quailty outbord manufactures build one--Bob

Are you having problems or just want to lower the voltage? A lot of the smaller older outboards had unregulated systems but it doesnt seem to bother anything. Mine gets up to 17 volts but I have had no electrical problems. I asked this question too as I was concerned, but it seems that the amperage is so low it doesnt matter that the volts are high.

Sounds like your charging system is working normally. On a regulated system the output voltage is a little less that 15 volts.

My 74 Johnson puts out 18.5 volts I just turn the lights on if I start to get nervous...

Same situation with my 40Hp. 17V @ WOT. Was considering adding a homemade regulator then realized all these lower HP motors operate the same. I just run it the way it came from the factory.

Well it looks as though I am worrying about nothing I just thought the voltage was a little high at 15/16 volts at wot but this seems to be the norm thank you all.
Regard William Wright
