Re: Fitting kicker bracket

Aye, Philby Lad,
How goes it? Well I hope.
A bracket for a kicker on a foam-filled transom eh? I don't know how big nor how heavy this addition is going be be but think along the lines of reinforcing both the inside and outside of the transom, cutting a piece of aluminum the size and shape (more or less) of the transom, bolt through the transom soz you sandwich the transom with the two pieces of aluminum. Thickness of the aluminum would depend on the load on it. Be sure to seal both the bolts and bolt holes throughly so NO water leaks into the foam.
Just a thought off the top of my head.
Let us know what you come up with.
G'luck & c/6

hooty

Kicker will have to go next to the transom. Don't know if there is plywood in there as I've never drilled it.

Problem is it's 2 foot thick so there is no access inside.

I was thinking along the lines of an expanding bolt ????

Things are great hooty. Looking forward to ******mas

A two-foot thick transom full of foam eh. What's hanging on it now? I mean is it a o/b, i/o, b/b (blow boat) or what? I'm having a hard time picturing the beast (or beastette) in my mind.

Have a good w/end & c/6

hooty

Sorry hooty
Not explaining this very well.

The Transom is just a couple of inches carryung a 70 Rude. The kicker bracket will have to go either side of this on the chunky parts

Eureka! I have a mental picture and as far as mounting a kicker bracket there, it ain't a pretty picture. Your engine is recessed and mounted between the two "chunks".
Not knowing how thick the fiberglass is back there, I'd be REAL reluctant to use expanding bolts. Again, ya need to spread the load out as much as possible. How about the bow? Could you use a trolling motor? Or a sail? Or a paddle?

c/6

hooty

Re: Fitting kicker bracket

I thought about an electric trolling motor.

Basically I want this as a backup in case the main motor fails.

Is the trolling motor a good option. ??

The oar is out of the question for a man of my fitness level !!!!

If someone could tell me how to post a picture of my boat, it might help.

Hi Philby!
You have probably the same boat I just bought, a Dell Quay Dory 15?
Do your boat has a self bailing system?
Is it a valve or another system that prevent the water from coming into the motorwell when it is in the water. In my boat it is only a hole in the transom and it is submerged when the engine is mounted. A lot of water is flowing in through the drain hole and fill the motorwell half up. Some water is also coming in to the boat deck through a smaller drain hole in the wall between the boatdeck and the motorwell.
If you still in this forum please give me a hint.
All the best
Paul

Re: Fitting kicker bracket

I thought just sprang to mind. Half the drainhole bushing is missing. What I can see of material in the transom is not foam but some kind of plywood in several layers. The boat has not been on the water for 2 years. Could the foam in the aft of the boat be sucked with rainwater and hence the aft of the boat to heavy to keep the drain hole over the waterline when I put the engine on?

Paul
