Hi I have been having a water pump problem on my 35hp Evinrude forever and I really dont know what it is anymore.I have replaced the water pump several times and still no luck I tried applying rtv instead of the gaskets and nothing! I also opened up the head cleaned everything out really well replaced all with new gaskets and still the same result and today I put basically the whole engine in water and it kinda worked am I having some kind of vacuum leak somewhere? I tried it with the ear muffs and also with a small bucket that just covers the water pump inlets and it doesnt do anything at all. I have tried basically everything and nothing is working took it to boat mechanics etc and nothing so if anyone could please give me some advice I would greatly appreciate it.

Also how does a water pump actually work?
does it suck up the water with vacuum?

Thanks in advance,
Danny

How about the thermostat? Drop the lower unit and hook a hose to the water tube and see what kind of flow you get. At rest the water pump should be underwater, under power the water is pushed into the water intakes. The water pump is not a vacume pump. With the lower unit off, submerge lower unit in a barrel and turn drive shaft with a drill, check pump out put. Just thinkin.

I actually left the thermostat out for now.. I also tried pumping water with a hose thrue the water pump tube and it flows fine.. I set the lower unit in a cooler and spun the driveshaft with a drill and it seemed to work ok..

I've had similar problems but now fixed. Have you looked at the upper grommet that goes on the water tube? "mine was fried" also the thermostat was bad in mine, and the water deflectors were crystallized and blocking water passages. If you do a search here on water deflectors here, you will see what I found out the hard way. Hope this helps.

You said that you ran it in a bucket that just covers the the water inlets, that is not enough water. The water level should be above the pump.

Well I ran it like that and with the ear muffs then also way past the pump which it is the only time it works but to get it to flow water out I had to rev it a bit before it started to come out and it would kinda just spit water out at times.

Used water pump RTV instead of the gaskets it brings and RTV'ed everything good and seems to be working good now! :D:D:D
