I would mount it between your battery charger and filter if possible, or make a bracket so it would mount on the protruding corner by the batteries

Re: Fixed Fire Extingisher For Engine Compartment

With not having the time to do the proper research, I seem to remember something in the regulations that said fire extinguishers must be mounted as to be easily accessible and away from the engine compartment and fuel tanks.

If the engine catches fire how are you going to get to the extinguisher if it is located in the engine compartment? Most I have seen down here are located right near the driver area or even towards the front of the boat.

Just a thought. Probably someone will be along with the proper regulations that will have the definite answer to this.

NBE - looks like the one Mark is talking about is an automatic system with an activator that senses the fire & then empties out into the compartment. It has a manual backup "rip cord" attachment in case the activator poops the bed.

Most proberly there will be an installation manual with it, they will explain the correct position to install. I assume not too close to the exhaust manifold but closer to equipment that can easily catch fire (wiring) and with the nozzles in a good direction aswell. A good sealed engine compartment helps extinguishing fires aswell.

I've got an older Halon one in my boat (16 yrs old now) and it's bolted to the front of the engine compartment so it's approx 2 ft in front of the engines and right in the middle of the 2 of them. Works best if the engine compartment is closed.

not answering his question, but about halon... actually, it only works if the compartment is closed. halon displaces oxygen, extinguishing the fire. it is very important to know that if you do have a fire and that halon is activiated, that you don't immediately open the compartment. you can easily have a flash up from introducing oxygen back to the space. you need to allow the compartment to completely cool before opening it.

yep I know all about Halon, worked in the raised floor mainframe computer envireonment most of my career, you don't want to be in there when it lets go, blows the tiles right up off the floor supports, bad for humans, not only hard to breathe but flying objects all over!
