I originally posted my question a week ago or so and is here http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=242101

I put a new lower shift cable in along with water pump (mine had cracks and was pretty much destroyed) and got the boat back together. ADJ the shift cable per the Manuel and I Still had no reverse. I know reverse works cause I tested it while I had outdrive hanging from my rafter and it worked fine.

What I found was the brass shifting arm mounted to the gimble (not the one on the outdrive) had some slop in it. Like its worn out a bit. I shimmed it and that fixed the problem. I get FWD and REV perfectly. Anyone ever here of that wearing out? When I got the boat I had to order a new shift arm (the part thats in the upper section of the outdrive) due to it missing.

Any way if anyone is having any similar issues and have swapped cables and still cannot get a solid rev lock check out the brass shifting pieces.

i am going to check my reverse tomorrow, but it was gone last season.
what i think you are speaking of is the shift shaft (looks like a boot and a leg? mine was bent...$50 later..) and i have no idea how it got bent. anyway, that solved all of my shift problems.

i'd guess, from reading, that they get bent by not putting it in fwd prior to removal...

that shift shaft is not tight fitting. i replaced mine and if i remember right the tolerance was around .100'' between the shaft and the bush. sorry, can't find the documentation to prove that this is ok. i'm thinkin it was stated on paper in the replacement part i bought, or maybe read it on mercstuff.com (if there, not like they've been totally truthfull in some things).... anyways, it's sloppier than ya'd think it'd be. maybe yers was an aftermarket part. i got a new glm one and had the reverse (no pun intended) problem. it was to tight. verticaly. had to file down the shift shaft lever on the bottom of it. i decided not to use that NEW part. replace it with a new mercruiser one. worked perfect... slop (lateraly, not verticaly) and all....
bigE. i'm assumin ya shimed it verticaly. did ya have the plastic washer underneath the shift shaft lever that's supposed to be there?
