Hey all, just want to check in on the reputation of a Yamaha 5.0l engine and outdrive.
I'm looking at a 1992 Chaparral 2370... a bit of a fixer upper- it sat in an old drafty barn for 3 years without a cover. The cockpit it shot (rats), but it just needs reupholstering. The cabin is fine. The engine/bay is MINT, same with the bilges. You could eat off the bilge bottom or engine block, just a little dusty. Everything inside the bay looks brand new... it's loaded with options...inverter, hot water heater, etc. Looks like the day it came off the lot... and I do know my way around engines/electrics.
The engine/outdrive, however, is a Yamaha 5.0l. Never seen one before! Are they solid??
It comes with a dual axle trailer and surge brakes... he's asking 7, I'm offering $3500 because I think he'll take it.. he doesn't really care about the sale or $$, he just wants it gone.
Sound good, even if it needs a few G's in repairs?? (That boat is going for between $14-25 cdn around here)
The boat needs cockpit upholstery and a good cleaning. Maybe new gauges, and some of the canvas peices are missing.... that's it.

Any opinions??
Thanks guys.

I don't have the 5.0 Yamaha, but I have the 4.3L V6 and it has been great. I found a mechanic near me that isn't afraid to work on them either. I called several and none of them would touch it for whatever reason. One thing you will here is that parts are hard to come by. What I have found is that parts aren't all that hard and you can interchange some other parts without much trouble.

IMHO with so many other boats why stick your self with a drive live(YAMAHA) that at BEST will have limited parts and REALLY LIMITED service centers

Well, for the price I'm willing to deal with a few issues. I just hope there hasn't been any issues with freezing or oil sludge from it sitting for 3 years.. Plus, I'm not going to be taking it in for service... I do all mechanical work myself, it's just a matter of finding parts.

All the parts on the boat are all cheap and easily attainable, the engine is a chevy car engine basically and outdrive is a mercruiser alpha.Winshields and stuff like that might be a little different.

i don't know where micel is buying his parts, but i want to know. there is nothing cheap about owning a boat. merc and volvo use the chevy engine. i would definately find out who the manufacturer is of the engine and outdrive. and parts availablity.

Yamaha used gm,they had a 5.7 with a duo-prop that was excellent but never really caught on.I was speaking of relativity. If you do have the duo-prop locating parts may be a issue.Yes it doesnt mater what make of engine or boat, they are all extremely expensive to fix up.Sometimes you will come out ahead by buying a new rig!
