Fixing a Transom and Stringers!

Well, I have a couple questions now that I am eyeball deep into a stringer repair. I started with the stringer replacement and it became more then I originally thought...always the case I am sure. I have a 15' 1975 Galaxy with an open bow and a fiberglassed U-shaped seating area in front. In order to replace the main "spine" stringer it appears the boat cap (not sure what its called) has to come off. I have seen other sites that show this whole cap coming off in order to lift out the front U-seat and the back covered area around the transom. When I look under the outer edge by the bumper area it looks like it has been sealed with silicone and I can see on the inside that the bumper has been riveted on. Is this cap fiberglassed to the boat or just riveted and sealed? Here are my two questions:

1.How much of a job is it to remove this cap to get access to the stringer and the transom.

2.What are your thoughts re: a poured (ie Seacast) transom vs. new glassed plywood.

Much thanks from a newbie...

All of your questions are answered in the Restoration and Building section here:

There are some awesome, very detailed restoration threads there that are well worth reading.
Use search for Seacast. There are many different opinions on it. Mine is this: if I have to chainsaw the old transom out anyway, isn't it just as easy to go ahead and put the wooden transom back in?
Your cap shouldn't be glassed on.
