fixing crack on bottom of hull

I have a crack that's maybe 8" long on the bottom of my '86 Ranger 373V. The crack is about 2/3 of the way back and about 1' from the center line of the hull. It's getting a bit worse and I need to get it fixed. I don't believe it has spidered out any, but it might be seeping some water into the bilge area.

My question is, is this something that someone with a fair amount of do-it-yourself "fiberglass" knowledge can do safely or is it truly best left to the pros?

I called one place and they want $250 if they don't have to pull it off trailer, another $75 if it needs to be pulled of and then another $150 or so, if they need to actually re-lay some glass. The ranger dealership said I could probably do it myself, but the glass shop was worried if not done perfectly, the whole bottom of the boat could delaminate, and I realize that is possible.

My experience with glass work is with standup style jetski's and the stuff I did has held up for years under fairly heavy abuse. I do realize, however; that the bottom of my boat is subject to a lot of stress.

The materials I have on hand are AL 2108 Epoxy Laminating Resin, SMC resin, bi-axle cloth (stitch bonded fabric, which is unidirectional roving oriented in a +/- 45 degrees with 0.75 oz/sq ft chop strand mat on one side and 17oz/sq yd roving), chop strand mat and woven roving. I realize the crack would need to be cut/ground out. The problem is I don't think I have access to the crack from the inside, only from the outside. I also don't have a way to redo the gel coat. Not sure if that is important or not, as long as I seal and paint the repair.

What should I do?

Can you post a pic?
Make sure you are dealing with a crack in the glass and not just a crack in the gelcoat before maybe doing more than is needed to repair it.
Does it look like it's cracked into the fibers, or just a surface crack in the finish?

I'll try to get a picture posted. I am pretty certain it has entered into the glass somewhat, I'm even suspecting it to be allowing water to seep into the hull a little.

I have a similar issue with mine as the hull has a few chips out of it from the previous owner beaching it. I have heard that marin-tex is a pretty aggresive adhesive and can be purchased in other colors. That's the way I'm leaning right now. I will keep an eye on this post to see the outcome! Good luck!

Marine Tex only comes in two colors - white and gray. The white is for FRP and the other for metal, i.e. engines, etc. :D

Well, I tried to get some good pictures, not yet sure how they turned out. I'll try to post them in a bit.

I have pretty much decided to let the pros do it. I'm still not sold, I couldn't do it, but I checked with my insurance company and my deductible is $250 and it looks like this could cost into the $400-$600 range. I do not have the equipment for gel-coat and it appears that the gel-coat has spidered forward a bit. The insurance company also said that it shouldn't affect my rates, $12 per month is all I pay anyway, and it definately wouldn't go against my clean vehicle record. So for $250, why waiste my time.....maybe some other nicks can get fixed at same time!

I'll try to post those pics in a bit....

Re: fixing crack on bottom of hull

I took it to the shop. I think it got into the glass a little, but most of the damage is probably into the gel-coat. I hope I'm not getting robbed, but it's costing me $400 for the work. I'm trying to decide if I should claim it on insurance or not as I have a $250 deductible.

I probably could have fixed the glass ok, but I don't have a way to repair the gel-coat and at least I'll know it's done right. He's also touching up a few other nicks and such.

I guess it spidered the gel-coat several feet in front and behind the cracked, but he didn't act like fixing all of that was very important. Is this true? He said that would get expensive very fast if he had to replace all of the gel-coat and that I should save the claim for more major damage.

Re: fixing crack on bottom of hull

Sorry, got distracted by my wheel falling off, which was discussed in another thread.....

I had the area fixed, didn't repair the entire bottom, because he said it wasn't a big deal and very expensive. He did fix the spidering and the area where it was cracked. He said he ground the area down to paper thin, then built up from there. Everything looks great where he did the repair, but it makes the rest of the bottom look a bit pathetic. All else looked fine before, but now you have new and 20 year old!!

I'm sure a few times out and it'll all blend in better! At least there isn't a hole in my boat anymore!

well i would be very weary of a cracked pad you might have delam issues sooner than you think i would sand it down paper thin and build it up just as he did the hull will only get worse if you dont

Sorry, but you lost me here. I'm not sure where the cracked pad came in.

I had the hull fixed, which was my only crack and he sanded/ground it down and built it back, then gel coated the entire area that had the spidering. The only part that wasn't fixed was some light bubbling of the gel coat or some paint that had been sprayed over the bottom. He said that part wasn't necessary, just cosmetic.
