Fixing new hull ID HIN

For some reason in Wisconsin boats over a certain age have to get a new hin when they are sold to a new owner from the owner that was grandfathered into the old laws. So now I need to get the new HIN on my boat on the transom and somewhere inside as well. The hull is fiberglass. Does anyone know of a good way of doing this that will still look good and is cheap?

Here you go, right from the dnr site.
  • Vessels built before November 1, 1972 may keep the non-standard Hull ID only if it is unique to the Wisconsin registration system. If the Hull ID is not unique, the owner must be assigned a new Hull ID number.
  • An owner assigned a new Hull ID will be notified of the new Hull ID and provided instructions on how to permanently affix the new Hull ID to the vessel in accordance with law.
For what its worth, I just registered a 1966 Starcraft in Wi, with only a serial number on the boat, no HIN.
It was not mentioned and I received my stickers and card in the mail about a week after filling out the form.

You can do the one on the transom with a couple of pop rivets above the waterline, most of the are on the upper right hand side as you are facing the stern of the boat, the one on the inside of the boat, just use an aluminum strip like on the transom and use a good quality two part epoxy and you should be good to go.

go to a trophy shop, have a small HIN plaque made, rivet it on.

when I registered my wooster hellion in WI just before moving down to FL, they added a letter to the serial number. it was already an aluminum stamped SN tag, so I simply punched the new letter after it.

I know I need it because the dnr people gave me the new number and told me to put it on in a permanent position. That doesnt tell me a good and inexpensive way of doing it though. The trophy plaque might be an option I'll have to call around and see what that will cost

Trophy plates around here are about $3.00 then extra for the engraving, I just use a small strip of flat aluminum and stamp the information with a metal stamping kit I bought off Amaz o n, then I drill two holes and use to aluminum pop rivets, that is on the transom. Inside the boat I put it inside the side rail with two part epoxy, I have also seen guys putting inside the rail glued to the gunnel.

The dnr is supposed to tell you where and how to attach it.

Call them.

When I called them they said it has to permanently inside somewhere and on the transom somewhere. I asked what the recommended way of doing it is and they said just do it permanently. That's two phone calls of sitting on hold for 20 min that got me no where. Theres a marine shop in town up here that has a lot of stuff but their people know about as much about boats as I do about building a jet engine and it took several minutes to get them to understand what I even want to do, much less getting the stuff to do it they just said call this corporate number.
