I have recieved this boat that was my grandads.I was to fix it up a little it has sat a about 10 years. It is a 71 12fter . He put a 1956 Johnson 10hp on it. What i was wondering is whats the best was to paint the fiberglass. I would like to kind of restore the motor cover to its original state. if anyone could help me with some ideas again thanks for the help.

If the paint/surface isn't completely trashed, ie. bubbled, cracked, down to the inner glass, you can probably pull the outboard, get a good orbital polisher and go to work with some rubbing compound. That's a lot of work, but you can try a small area to see if the results are worthwhile. If you decide to repaint it, you'll still have to do some cleanup...search this forum for "repainting a fiberglass hull/boat" and you should get the info you need. If that Johnson is still running, or even not, it's worth having. A guy named Peter McDowell, http://www.nymarine.ca/ , has paint and decals for restoring the old motors...pricey but highly recommended if you want to do it right. See if you can find someone the same vintage as Dad/Grandad in your neighborhood who knows boats/motors...that will make the experience really rewarding and you'll learn a lot from the project and make a new friend along the way.
