Fixing wiring harness?

incredible how the problems keep adding up! just when i think i'm about to be back on the water...anyhow,

engine turning over, would catch, then immediately die. fuel in the carb, and i was getting spark as well. HOWEVER, with the key in the "on" position, i had 0v at the coil (+). no voltage to the purple wire at the choke. all my gauges worked, so i figured the problem was at the wiring harness. when i went to disconnect the harness, the #5 (purple) pin became disconnected. i suspect this was my problem. it isn't obvious to me how to replace the pin in the boat side of the harness--doesn't look like it was crimped/soldered in there before. should it be? looks like it would be much easier to just jump the wire to the choke connection, but i hate to half-*** wiring. makes future troubleshooting much harder.

and why was i getting a spark when cranking? hard to tell from the wiring diagrams, but does the slave solenoid provide 12v to the coil through the pur-yellow wire when cranking for a little extra oomph?

Easiest way is to remove both ends from the main plug and use bullet connectors

Yup. Bypasses the voltage regulator during starting.

Maybe you can just cut back the purple before and after the harness plug and add a new section of purple wire with a new plug just for IT. not as neat or nice as the factory harness but at least minimum factory wire will be removed. That is, if you can not repair the factory pin.

Ha, BT Doc beat me to it!

i would LOVE to see an actual wiring diagram for this boat--the schematic is nice to find the wires, but i have no idea what's going on with the wires in the voltage reg, for example. from what you said, the red-purp must be the volt reg output back to the battery, but it's hard to see that from the schematic...or what's going on in the slave solenoid.

yeah, hoping to avoid that. looks like the wire is in fact supposed to be crimped to the pin. i was able to ream the hole with a coat hanger, then pass the original wire through the hole and re-crimp to the original pin. rain kept me from trying it out, but seems like it should work.
