Does anybody know the proper etiquitte for displaying a flag from the side of a house? I'm buying one to display, however most that I've looked at are fixed...that is, they aren't capable of going to half-mast. Is that disrespectful? Should I just not display the flag if I'm unable to display it at half-mast? Thanks for your thoughts.

BRIAN

Brian:

At this point in time... I don't think it matters.

If the mast is not fixed you can bring flag to half mast. But if it is fixed such as a banner type... Fly it with PRIDE!!!!

G O D Bless America!!!

fone_man

At the Pentagon, they displayed it on the side of the building, and I have seen it the same all over town. It is the American Flag.Maybee it should be dispayed as diversly as the folks it represents. As deverse as we are,we are one.

Over the last few years I have seen less and less flags flown....fly it anyway you can and the more the better. It needs to be seen and again respected.

Brian,
I am in the military and have two friends who are not accounted for yet at the Pentagon . Anyway the answer to your question is (an I am assuming your putting it against the side of your house, flat) as you are looking at it the stars which should be in the upper left.

As someone else said it is the fact that you are flying it that matters

Deerdog

I think he was wondering if there is any way to simulate flying at half mast with a fixed mast flag. I was curious about this, too.

1/2 hour before dusk, flag must be taken down and foled properly.(triangle) with stars on top. Never fly at night or inclimate weather, Unless flag is illuminated. Never touch the ground. May be raised at sunrise...

deerdog, I'm sorry to hear about your friends...they, as well as all of the missing, injured, and killed, are in my thoughts & prayers.

Yensid, you are exactly correct about what I was looking for...I must not have been clear.

Regardless, I now have a 3X5 flag and am displaying it proudly from my house, as are all my neighbors. It looks like the frickin' 4th of July around here...I'm very proud. Thanks for all of your ideas.

BRIAN

Re: flag etiquitte

OK, flags are supposed to be at full mast now, but I found out the answer to this for future reference. Fixed flags are supposed to have a black streamer attached to the top during times when flags are supposed to be half mast. This came from someone at the American Legion in charge of flag ettiquette. Not that I saw this once, so it doesn't seem like this is a very well known one.

MercilessMike got most of the other common ettiquette rules. Technically, you're allowed to fly your flag in inclement weather if it's 'weatherproof', but I didn't get any definition of what makes them weatherproof, so to be safe, I'm bringing mine even, even though it's polyester.

One final thing. Old, worn flags are supposed to be burned to be disposed of, though many people are uncomfortable with this because of the whole 'flag burning' controversy. However, in this case, it's not only OK but appropriate.
