I have a johnson 1979 6hp, have been working to get this up and running over past few months(slowly - waiting for parts and having a baby very soon) It has had water pump issues in the past i was told and on further inspection yes it neede a reasonable amount of work and a near obsolete spare part.

I have noticed the paint is cracked and flaking around the head and the block,
I realise this is due to heat but not sure what to think, any ideas???

**How hot has this engine got to crack and flake the paint??

**The engine does run, when it is back together after water pump and housing repairs should i be concerned??

**and what may i need to check for to further investigate?? Would it have gummed up inside but still be running well??

any thoughts appreciated

So is the head and block where the paint is cracked/flaking discolored? Overheating will damage the paint and will generally discolor the castings where it occurs. If its primer colored under the cracking/flaking paint, chances are it didn't get too hot for too long. Only two ways to tell if it was damaged in the process, tear it down and look inside or run it and keep your fingers crossed.

Re: Flaking Paint on motor, How Hot?

Thanks to the two replys,

The primer is still underneath and seems to be a reddish brown colour and doesn't seem to affected, the paint itself is not discoloured, just flakey (it is a bit brown around there but i think this is more external oil than heat)

I think i will just run it and if i get somewhere someone has a compression tester then i will test it. I would love to repaint but not sure if i have the skill or the available spare gaskets to start taking things off the motor in order to get the surface clear for painting. Another thing is a few of the head bolts are rusting (on the exterior) so these really need a paint i think...don't really want to pull them out for fear the might snap:eek:

thanks again to tmcalavy and tashasdaddy
