This didn't happen to me but my brother. Went duck hunting early one morning in a winyard (some sort of duck hunting boat fiberglass) Had everything in the boat (decoys, shells, guns, duck calls) At about 6 in the morning on a lonely road going toward the landing. My brothers friend noticed the sun was comming up earlier than usual because there was a lot of light comming from behind them. At about 50mph noticed boat was on fire. Aparently they had used a car battery with side posts as the starter battery for the boat, they also used a metal gas tank full of fuel. Also they then realized that the two came together going down the road ( bad combination)Stopped got out grabbed what they could from the boat which wasn't much. No fire extinguisher no water and no way to call for help, no brains! Unhooked boat from truck, At this time boat, trailer, and new 18hp mercury which was my brothers that he had loaned to his friend was on fire. Gas can finally got hot enough to start boiling the 5 gallons of gas a hole finally melted in the plastic gas guage on top and away it went. 40ft flames in the woods over the boatspaying all over for at least 5 minutes. Shot gun shells at this time started going off so it quickly became human hunting season so they decided to pull about half a mile down road. Fire department came 1 hr later. Put boat out after putting forest fire out. Engine was a puddle of aluminum, boat was, well let's say it wasn't a boat. Trailer wasn't a trailer anymore. No duck that day just roasted boat.

Trollhole,

Had something similar happen to a friend. He isn't he type of person that puts everything back in it's proper place.

He was on his way fishing and stopped to fill up his six gallon tanks. Did so, and took off for the lake. Forgetting to put the cap on one of them.

He being a smoker, he mindlessly flicked a butt out the window. Guess where it landed? Now, what to do with an inferno that's hooked to your car.

He stopped and got it unhhoked, same scenario followed as your brothers, without the extra fireworks. :D

UNBELIEVABLE!!! Funny – laughed – but as I read it my heart sank at the same time. I can vividly picture all that expensive equipment going up in flames.

I hunt, fish and boat and I just can’t imagine all three hobbies going up in flames at one time. And the money……

Great story – great lesson for everybody!!!

Re: Flame thrower

I used the fire extinguisher I carry in my truck to put out an engine fire on someone's old clunker car a year ago. I hadn't gotten around to having it recharged yet, but I dropped it off this afternoon after reading that story. Yikes!!

That is so funny, but like capt_u said, it is heartwrenching to picture.
I just got home insurance last month so if something like that happens, I will still get some money so I can buy it all over and start again.
Hope you had insurance to cover it.
Brother Chris...

Re: Flame thrower

Lesson to be learn. Always have safety equipment onhand for the unforeseen things happening. When I got my boat, first thing I got was safety equipment, fire extinguisher, paddle, etc... Hope I don't face situation like that. Thanks for reminding how important safety equipment are.
