Just converted engine ignition system from a points type to a pertronix electronic type with a flamethrower coil. Engine starts immediately and runs great. Problem having is that the Garmin GPS/ chartplotter flickers and turns off when the engine is put to power.

What do you mean "when engine is put to power"? Are you coming out of neutral?
What was changed out when you switched over?
I agree with Scott, something is loose. Check all connections, then check to see what voltage you have at the chartplotter?
Sounds like you don't have enough voltage getting to it, so it is shutting off on low voltage.

When I accelerate the engine speed the Garmin gps screen flickers real fast and after a very short while the unit will turn itself off. I am thinking that the power feed for the flamethrower coil is also supplying power to the gps unit. I also installed new MSD spark plug wires which I don't think is causing the problems.
I wonder if I run a seperate 12 volt +&- wires directly to the battery that will solve this problem.

Yes run right to the battery with an appropriate fuse.

Try powering the gps with a stand alone battery.

If still noisey it’s EMF off the coil.

Thank you for the reply. Checked voltage before starting the engine 12.5 at the fuse box and after starting the engine the voltage dropped to 9.8 and the unit turned off. Voltage at the battery when running was 13.4
I used my 12 power pak and powered the GPS total independent from the the boat system and the unit operated just fine. Wired the GPS to the other engine and electrical system and there were no problems. It seem that almost all the 12 volt equipment is wired to the starboard engine. Thanks again for the good reply.
