Flickering guages

I have a 93 bayliner capri with a 3.0L - Alpha one mercruiser. I recently noticed that at times the guages (voltmeter, temp and fuel) will "peg" for a time and then go back to normal. Temp goes to 260, voltmeter to negative 0 and fuel to full (frightening when you first notice it!!). I'm wondering if regulator on alternator is going bad? Haven't checked anything out yet but seeking advice before I do. The only operational thing I've noticed is:1) depth finder shuts down when this occurs and 2) putting it in neutral and then back into gear often straightens it out. Going down the lake, it seems to be fine, but does the flicker thing when at slow, low rpm speeds?? Any thoughts??

Re: Flickering guages

Sounds like a loose ground wire. Check the ground connections behind the console and at the battery. Look for corrosion at these points and make sure all connections are tight.
