Floatation pods for 16' (15' 9") Landua flatbottom boat w/69 40hp motor. Pods y/n?

So my boat is a 16' and its flat bottom jon boat. Its about 5.5' wide in the rear. Max HP motor is 35hp. Well couldn't pass this 69 evinrude 40hp motor! I know the max hp is 35, but i got the 40hp anyways- good deal. Being that the boat is maxed out at 35 Hp, i thought that if were to make some floatation pods that i can weld to back of boat then it will increase my weight limit for the 40 hp motor i plan to put on it. Question would the 40hp really be too heavy for my boat or can i use the pods to up my max limit alittle to the 40hp. Any feedback will be great, i plan on working on boat/pods as soon as i get home in the next few days. thanks in advance dubfab

The capacity of your boat, as specified on the boat's capacity plate, is set by the manufacturer who follows US Coast Guard guidelines when they determine that. In some places it's against the law to go above that capacity, some insurance companies will give you grief should you ever be involved in a claim and you exceed that, and if nothing else a lot of people on the iboats forum will yell at you. Adding pods, from a legal standpoint, will change nothing unless you jump through who knows how many hoops and have your boat re-certified.

forget the pods. I don't think they are ever a good idea and certainly not over 5 HP from a 45 year old motor.

If your motor is too big for the boat, don't add more boat; replace it.

But I'm not saying 5 is too big. What's the weight difference--that's the real concern.

thanks for the feedback! i surely don't want to violate any laws. After reading into it i became aware of the different laws. The motor itself is little on the heavy side. I just thought that if the pods were installed then it would alter the max hp allowed. Of corse i know i'll be 5 hp over my max limit on my boat, but i really would like more info from some of the guys that seen/ have been in my situation. I surely don't want to get rid of my motor and i want to use it but safety comes first. I thought that the float pods upgraded the max hp limit because of more of the boat displacing more water. The pods would be installed the right way and from what i seen on the internet got me wanting to install pods and motor. I don't know??

speaking only on the weight/floatation issue, that old 40 is definitely lighter then a new 220-230 lb 35hp four stoke so weight is not an issue for you but I do understand you are thinking floatation as far as increasing the hp rating.

as to adding floatation to get your boat recertified to a higher hp, it can be done but talk to the coast guard and see what would be required of you, it may need a reinforced transom to go along with floatation or just a reinforced transom alone would be enough

great info guys. Is there a link to that coast guard for pa? i looked on the site and couldn't find anything yet. so could just big boat shops do the recertification or would i have to go to a different place.

5hp is not a big deal as far as the boat is concerned but insurance and the coast guard is what I would worry about. Now Im not saying you should or I would but Ive seen guys change cowls or stickers to match the capacity ratings to stay under the radar. Other option is have the boat recertified like mentioned.

Here is the short answer... FORGET trying to re-certify anything... prolly not gonna happen... certainly not worth the effort.... either ignore the certification and run it OR get a different motor or boat... sell the 40 for a profit and but a newer 35 (which btw MIGHT make the boat go faster) or sell the boat and get one rated for more hp.

Finally the correct answer, the one that makes sense.
