I have a Volvo penta v8 2005 I/O that has been flooding alot lately. Cold if you miss the first turn over and don't keep it alive it floods.. Then warm while skiing the other day wife sorta did hear the first turn-over and it flooded.. I have been very careful and have a good cold start procedure that has been working fine, but my wife is used to her car and having some problems..
Main question is... Once flooded is there any cure besides waiting, and how long should I need to wait? I have gotten into a flood and reflood cycle several times, sucks.
Also, is this just part of dealing a carberated engine? Last season this wasnt really a problem. Boat was just in for service. Could there be another problem causing this?

Re: Flooding any cure..

Why don't you find a cure for the problem? Is it a carb problem (faulty float or stuck needle and seat) is the choke working?
When flooded, open the throttle wide open and crank it till it starts. Immedieatly Pull it back to near idle when it starts. DO NOT allow it to hit 10,000 rpm.
Are you sure it's flooding, or do you just not know how to start a carbed engine?
All cars have EFI and you just turn the key, not with a carb!

Re: Flooding any cure..

Admittedly, I am far from an engine expert. I know a few basics and maintence things and thats it. My procedure to start cold works fine.. 2 full pumps and idle in neutral at 1000 rpm till warm. Wife this afternoon let it die while trying to do that, and now it is so hopelessly flooded its ridiculous.
So I will try the wide open throttle technique you described, I just always thought that opening it up like that would just prolong/worsen the flooded state.. I will go try and report back.. battery gertting weak with attempts.. sigh.. I am no mechanic!

Also choke is automatic as far as I know. No mention of it in manual. I for any carb adjustments I will have to take it in. That exceeds a physician,s know how!

I know it's automatic .............. IF it's actually working.

When starting, cold, you may need 2 pumps, but if it dies before warming after that first start, just give give it one pump or even less and try it. Experiment, It ain't no EFI, and every engine is a little different. And if it is in need of a tuneup, then it may flood even easier.

I really don't think it is flooding. I'm pretty sure it's your starting procedure more than anything else.

Alright; time to pick the guru's head. How did you know it was not flooding?
