So i bought my first boat and completely gutted the interior...I am starting to redo the floors this weekend and was wondering what the best option is?

The wood is sturdy in most spots so I am cutting out the bad sections and laying new plywood. after that, i plan on fiberglassing the entire boat to seal the floors and solidify everything.. my question is:

what is the best option for flooring?

I want like a grey colored floor with red accents (border maybe) because the seats i bought are RED/GREY/CHARCOAL...

It would be nice for everything to match so should i go with marine carpet? considering the floor would be waterproof with fiberglass, i think it's safe... or should i go with epoxy or something over the fiberglass?

any suggestions would be awesome!! I am also considering the costs so that definately will weigh into the final decision..so if you have an expensive or cheap option, please indicate that in your reply. THANKS!

ok, i can do that even though the rest of the wood is flawless...but that still doesn't answer my question so i truly, deeply, appreciate your input.

Hello Oren..

Do what your doing IMHO.. Cleat in your bad wood..

Glass over using poly and a few layers of 1.5 oz mat ( as you might or might not of suggested ).

Carpet ? yea..I would use the Marine grade rubber backed ( more expesive but you might find some scraps for your red ).

Then scuff the whole floor..layout your Main color..Grey ?

Then layout and cut oversized your red stripe(s).

Ready to glue ? glue your Main down..quick..layout your red over your grey and cut both through quickly.... pull up your scraps of gray and red then glue your red down in the channel you just cut with extra glue on the edges .. roll down good and clean up with appropriate cleaner ( water in most cases ).

You can use some other scraps of carpet to "fur" your edges to blend.

Hope this helps and good luck.

YD.

Re: Floor on '87 Mach 1 Project

I replaced the decks in my "89" Mach1 magnum.

But I did the sun deck and motor cove a little different which gave me about another foot of floor space and I can put an one of the Igloo cube coolers under each rear seat. They are hinged at the front and it gives me a lot of extra space not having a cooler under footphoto.jpgseat3.jpgseat2.jpg

between the seats is a narrow bench large enough for kids and the bench seat lifts out so you can still get to the belts and check the oil.

tswickso....
that was a great idea, i like where ur heads at...i actually have 2 open compartments on each side of the sundeck with handles on hatches so you dont have to open the whole deck to access them. 1 has a sink which i use as a bait well/cooler that drains into the bilge, the other give me access to the batteries and such...ill post more pics

produceguy....
agreed....start a thread for mach 1 owners, im always interested to see what others are doin and sharing ideas...

Thanks Pro When I get a chance I'll run down to where I store her and get some finished pics and post them for you guys so give me a couple weeks it worked out really well. I saw that in your pic but wasn't sure what was under there. My sink is in the cockpit under the windshield but I'm also thinking of removing the ice box (since I now have coolers) when I redo the cuddy and put an a/c unit there in the future but not immediate future.I don't think there is enough space for a head so I'll keep using the porta-potty.

Looks good. If I could have afforded it I would have put fiberglass floors in then the only wood would be in the transom.

Re: Floor on '87 Mach 1 Project

Thanks. Yes there is alot of wood on these boats but I like it. I sanded and restained all the wood ( that was a chore) turned out ok. I bought it back in April ( first boat) and I really enjoy it. Motor was rebuilt in 01, runs great but I need to redo the deck, hopeing to at least get one good season out of it before I start tearing it up.
After reading all the threads about rotten stringers and transoms make me nervis about the floors. The more Ill dig I am sure the more Ill find.
Your right, resin is not cheap. So I hope to see more pics of yalls riggs soon.
tswiczko, Is that a Mach1 in your avatar pic?
