I have been told two different things. One is that you can not have a permanent cover over the gas tank and also I have been told you only have to have access to the fill tank hose, fuel gage connection, etc. What are the regulations and what is preferred?
I am replacing the floor in a 17 ft starcraft. The floor origanally had a seperate piece of plywood that was screwed in that was the same size as the gas tank. It was obvious that this is where water leaked through, because the stingers and crossmembers were rotten under these seams. It seams to me it would be better to put in just one peice of flooring. Any comments or suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

the biggest problem peopel have is that they have to chop the boat apart to get at the tank if there is a problem

If the wood was sealed correctly below the pannel it would never rot :)

tommays

mjk,

You only need access to the fill and and intake areas for hose repair, sending unit, etc. The Coast Guard "recommends" that you be able to inspect the tank from all sides. For most boats this is not possible from the manufactuer.

I made a "removable" hatch, by this I mean it will be screwed into place and sealed with 5200, but if I need to I can remove it and replace the tank without hacking my rebuild apart.

Here is my project: Neversink Rebuild

The last couple of pictures show where the "hatch" is.

Hope this helps.

Peace.

Ed.
