Finishing up work on my floor, I have the pieces cut, shaped etc. I’ve had some advice about not having a piece of wood come up at a wrong angle against the inside of the hull or it will crack spider web there. So I’m trying to figure out how to do the floor to hull joint with out the wood actually touching the hull. I guess use some filler in the smallest gap I can right

your right, the floor if it was to rest against the hullsides would create a hard spot. In the event of a collision the rest of the hullside could flex while the part connected to the floor wouldn't be able to....a crack along the seam results. Although plenty of boats without an inner liner (ceiling) are built this way, I wouldn't advise it.

Make the proper bevel on the new floor say that it is a 1/8"-1/4" gap between the hullsides and the new floor. Then you can either fill the gaps with some fillets around the perimeter or try to directly start tabbing with some glass. The more tabbing the stronger the joint is and the less likely you will get cracks.

We'll see what others have to offer.

Andy is correct, but, same will happen where stringers are.
I've never worried about a sharp edge on the floor not "matching" the contour of the hull.
Never worried about a slight gap in places either.
When the floor is fastened down in place, go back over the edge gaps, imperfections with a "chopped" glass. Comes in a can, use it like body filler (bondo).
Smooth it all out and cover in fiberglass mat up on the floor sides.

You can even use body filler if you want? Lots of stringers are "set" by using nothing but body filler. They are then glassed over and secured in place though.

IF that's the style of floor you have? One that's covered in glass matting.

the stringers are bedded in epoxy/high density filler . ive used epoxy and marine grade for every thing .ive recently started to use the 403 microfibers and am happy with that also. im looking at using the 4 lb foam cause im a heravy guy right now untill i go to the gym.so ill need the floor support.

Search and you might find- This.

Hate to say but does anyone search anything?

BTW I never did a real // more like |/ kinda.

I filled the gaps with peanut butter. :) Actually epoxy with a lot of fibers to make it real stiff then I pushed it into the gaps. This was very smooth and no cracks. I tested the boat after I layed the filler into the gaps. There were some large waves of 3- 4 feet. :) Ok I was trying to jump the wake. But I was also testing for cracks and none appeared. I then layed the cloth from edge to edge over a layer that was 6 inches wide and layed parallel to floor and hull.

Excellent job on replacing your deck! The 1984 Bayliner I just bought is in similar shape and I will be going thru what you did. Your pictures and info will be a great help!!!
How did you remove the box that the seats mount on? Was it fiberglassed up the sides and screwed in place?
