Was reading some posts and looking through some of the links givin on member projects.i had a thought about the flooring and foaming.ive notice that all floors in the links seem to be glassed in before the foaming is done.i could be wrong on that however.but would it not be less time consuming as well as less difficult to foam before you glass the floor in.now i understand the purpose to have the floor screwed down first in order to get good penetration into all the little nooks and cranies.but couldnt you set the floor glass the sides foam then glass the rest of the floor in? makes more sense to me

Re: Flooring and foam

I worked at Marlin Boats for a few years, and they always foamed before any flooring was installed.

H.

I foamed after installing flooring because if you do it right, all the nooks and crannies get filled, and there is no doubt that the foam is providing structure to the floor. It has to be done carefully or you can cause a blowout. I do not feel one way is any easier or faster than the other, so you have to choose which way will do what you want it to.

I did it both ways on my boat. Doing it before hand will require you get rid of the excess foam above the floor line. I used a belt sander and that is an incredibly messy bussiness. I did the remaining compartments of the floor through holes. After doing both: I prefer doing it through holes, no two ways about that.

Re: Flooring and foam

ok let me rephrase the question for better understanding
I intend to lay the floor and glass the edges BEFORE i apply the foam.my question is would it be better to pour the foam before i glass the whole surface of the floor or would it be more effecient to glass the floor cut holes full with foam then go back and reglass over the hole plugs?

Glue and screw, fill and fair. Tape. Then add foam.
Then glue in plugs, and glass over deck.

I would say you could go with just glassing the edges, foam through holes, and sheath it all afterwards, and you'll be fine. When you do it, run holes every few feet from transom to bow. Raise bow as high as you can. Start at transom end and pour small batches. When foam gets to hole, set the plug in and hold it down with weight. Go to next hole forward and repeat until complete. This method ensures that the entire void is filled with foam, not just a lump along the bottom with air gaps. Good luck..
