Radar 750

I live in Homosassa, Florida and in July and August the fishing here is excellent. Homosassa, if you didn't know, is the Tarpon capital of Florida. I fish for Tarpon every chance I get and in the last 3 years I've hooked and caught 35 plus Tarpon anchored about a half mile up stream from the Gulf in one of our local rivers. These Tarpon ranged in weight from 70 to over 200 pounds.

Homosassa & Crystal River, Florida. Less than 90 minutes north of Tampa. Check it out.

Also check out Marco Island, Everglades City (Ten Thousand Islands) or Chokoluski (sp). All are near or in the Everglades national park. Search the internet for more info.

Radar750
Give Boca Grande a look. Its about an hour south of Tampa. I lived in Englewood and Port Charlotte and Boca was the hot spot for some beautiful water.

I have to also vote for the homoassa/ crystal river area I grew up there and still have family in the area so go back often. In fact will be at the natures camp ground on the hall's / homoassa river in june. You just can't beat it for fishing, swimming, scuba diving, boating.
seven diffrent rivers within about 20 or 30 min. and more lakes then you can count in the area.

Yeah, lots of places to go and things to see down there. My advice to folks who think of vacationing in northwest Florida for a little Florida get away is to go away. The beaches were nice when you could see them, now all you see is people people everywhere.

If you haven't been to the keys, try and go. Start with john pennycamp state park, you can follow out the snorkel or dive charters, or go on them for a reasonable rate, Key Largo (mile marker 101 roughly). Then go down to Harris state park, Islamorada, mm 92.5. Its a great park on the atlantic side for tubing or swimming on some of the out islands right off shore, and ofcourse the fishing, which is some of the best around. If you can keep going down, check out Bahia Honda state park, which is a great capmground with cabins and tent spots. You'll need to get a reservation early. Bahia Hond is one of the best spots in the keys. You won't be dissapointed. All of these spots can be found on the web, and all have nice boat ramps.

Dave,

yep, born and raised. I can remember when we could drive on the beach. I can remember when locals could get to the beach....and see the beach. Now it's highrise condo's and traffic so thick it's faster to walk. People speaking many languages, and this weekend thousand and thousands of gays and lesbians. (nothing against gays and lesbians, but they will co-opt and take over the island for four days. I don't think any group should be able to take our beaches for Memorial day)

On the flip side, the net ban has been wonderful for the local inshore fisheries, so the mullet and specs and reds are doing great!
