~~ Flush Mufflers - GOOD or BAD??? ~~

I recently had to get a flush muffler for my outboard engine. The neighbors were complaining of my engine being too loud when I flush it out. I have never used it yet, but I just want to know if anyone knows if there is any harm to the engine when using it. The flush muffler goes over the end of the prop, and is tightened using clamps. Is this okay to do? It just seems weird, I think.

The muffler is a good idea, Brian.

In addition to the obvious advantage of not annoying your neighbors, it will provide the exhaust back pressure normally provided by the prop being under water.

Good luck. :)

My neighbors are complaining also. I never heard of this before. Where did you get it?

Brianmerc,

I have one. I use it on a 90 hp Rude, which really barks without it.

It provides back pressure as well. The backpressure makes it run much smoother on the muffs.

Highly recommended.

Tell the neighbors that if they wanted piece and quite, they should have bought out in the country. Next, they'll be complaining about the lawn mower being too loud. They're just jealous of your boat. Next time you flush, rev the engine a couple of times to get their attention.

Capt. Ken,

I see you're feeling "frisky" today. :D

Maybe they were there before he was?

Anyway, I like the flush muffler. My neighbors don't complain, but being courteous goes a long way.

I have never seen these. They are good for a 96 60hp johnny 2 stroke? if so, I will have to get one as i come in at dark a lot and never want to get the neighbors pissed. Is overtons the cheapest place to get them? is this what will work on my specific O/B? They dont make them for specific outboards??? How do they attach onto exhaust? Sorry for all the questions but i hate to order online site unseen w/o talking to rep or someone who knows about them.

Beaux,

It just clamps on the prop. hub. It should fit a 60. The directions say for 50 hp and up.

I used to do sort of the same thing with a block of plywood and bracket that allowed me to clamp it to the prop. nut. It worked, but was more of a hassle to mount/dismount and it looked sort of hokey.

Hi, Beaux.

If I had known they were available when I had 2 strokes I would have used one, even though my nearest neighbors are about 1/2 mile away.

I find that the 4 strokes are so quiet, even on the muffs, that I don't need the quieting and I put her in a tank to do any tuning.

ive been using the same for awhile its great. you can adjust the back pressure alittle by adjusting the bolts. everyone i know wants to borrow mine. i use it on my 120 johnson. cuts down on the noise. i spray the edge of mine with wd to help get over cup. once you use it you will wonder why you didnt buy one before <but thats me> overtons is the only one i know of that carries it.

Ya must live in one of those ritzy neighborhoods. Probably got one of those rent-a-cops frisking everyone as they enter the gates. Down here in LA, lower Alabama otherwise known as the panhandle of Florida, we all wake up before daylight. Who could sleep with all the hunters firing up those trucks and loading the dogs. Heck, this morning at 3, I woke up from all the clatter thinking Santa was here. Naw, just my son home from the Coast Guard and all his friends on the back deck drinking beer and shucking oysters. Ya'll have a good Christmas and come on back, ya hear!!!

My neighbors would probably be happy if it was JUST the noise. I think they're more considerate to ignore the towering column of blue 2stroke smoke (1st start after winterization) that drifts past their house...

I been using them for years for my benifit - not theirs! Lol!

I actually make mine. I cut the bottom off of a plastic gallon milk jug. I cut an "X" in the center, place it on the shaft and put the prop on without the thrust washer. The nut holds it all together even just finger tight.

Its amazing how close it is to the same backpressure as in the water.

Good luck!

I use a rubber hose and clamp and lead the house to a bucket of water, works great! the house attaches to the hub of the prop (just like the picture) and goes to a trash can full of water to the bottom. this way my engine is soft and it is not in a trash can REUSING the stuff I flushed out!
