Re: flushing a motor

Hi longdude,
It really does not matter if you use a barrel or muffs. Either way, you seem to know that you can't start a motor without water, as you will wreck the impellor. Just check that the water is coming out of the pee hole. The water enters in through the bottom of the leg(above the prop). There should be a few (1") slots with a screen, that is where the water comes in. The water will come out just below the casing for the motor, near the latch which hold the motor casing on top the motor.
Just keep on asking questions here, there are so many pros here that in no time you will be one yourself.
Another helpful thing to do is to buy a manual. That will pay for itself in no time.
Happy boating :D

I start my motors the first time every year this way to get the pump wet and for maintanence. You get muffs that cover the water intake holes good, and let the hose run for a few minutes to push water up to the pump. Then start it up and do your tune up, run fresh gas in there, or what ever. Then you know you are good to go when you hit the water. The impellor may stick to the housing when very dry, so this way or having it pump-deep in water is a must after long storage. Pump is normally just above where lower unit separates.
