My motor is equiped with the tell tail that can be unscrewed and garden hose screwed in to flush motor after salt water use without running the motor. I don't use it. I use muffs and run the motor.

I just figure that getting the motor up to operating temp and using the water pump to send the water in same direction with the same pressures would do a better job.

My question is: am I wasting my time?

I had this discussion with a friend at the marina yesterday and he insisted I was wasting fuel and making a lot noise for no good reason.

I don't think that flushing a salt water engine is ever a waste of time. Running it on muffs should work as well as backflushing with a hose I would assume. You are just replacing the salt water that is in the system with fresh water and hoping to rinse the corrosive stuff out. If we worried about fuel waste we wouldn't be running outboards. This is only my opinion. Please don't sue me because my lawyer is in jail.

One slight con issue is that the thermostats will not be open when backflushing so some regions will not flush well. One pro issue is that any debris wedged while running should be freed by backflushing. I'm lazy and just backflush. I would guess alternating methods would be a good thing!
Enjoy

A combination of the two huh? That makes sense.

I just never understood the backflushing thing I guess. I just couldn't fathom how it would be as good as muff flushing, you know getting it up to operating temp, opening the thermostats, using the water pump. I know, I know, the engineers that designed the thing put that back flush in for a reason....no doubt they're smarter than me.

I've just been using the muffs on outboards for many, many years. It's always worked fine. Never had a motor fail due to salt deposits or water jacket corrosion.

It's hard to teach an old dog new tricks. woof
