Flushing engine for winterizing

I have red Don's winterization thread. Very helpful by the way. I have my manuals and all the items I need to complete the task. My question is this. Should the thermostat be removed to flush and then run the salt away through the engine? I don't want to run the engine any longer than necessary. This way i don't have to wait for the thermostat to open. I want to of course get the salt away through the entire cooling system and warm the engine to change the oil. Any suggestions.

My stat opens on the muffs in a few minutes and you need to run it that long to get the oil warm enough to pump out

Re: Flushing engine for winterizing

I usually run an engine a minimum of ten minutes before an oil change. At 35 to even 50 degrees,it needs that long to get hot enough to change.Five minutes and it usually pumps out like glue, and hasn't had much time for contaminants and acids to become suspended in it.

That's plenty of time for the thermostat to open up,as well as getting stabilizer thru the fuel system.Once you've put the filter on,and the new oil in and run to check for leaks ..... you're ready to fog.

Is there possibly an advantage to removing the thermostat to desalt ?I don't know,as we don't desalt here inland.Off the top of my head,I wonder if it would flush out too quick to be of use, unless the thermostat was in place.

Makes sence. The engine wont warm up fast enough without the thermostat. Thanks for the information.
