Mornin All --

Mercruiser 5.7 Alpha I Gen II... So I was flushing my motor and washing my boat after a stint in some salt water and I had a thought.
I use Castrol Super Clean De-Greaser in the wash water when I'm getting road funk off the boat. While I was hooking up to run de-salter stuff through the motor (after warmed up), I decided to run some of the de-greaser through the cooling system. Keep in mind that this particular stuff (purple jug) is non-flammable and non-volatile (and yet still cleans pretty well ... like super 409). Well I ran a single cup-full through the adapter (came with the de-salter) and got all sorts of gunk came out (mostly rust type stuff). So I ran a few more through.
Any thoughts? Am I hurting anything? Anyone else run anything odd through the cooling system to clean it out?

Thanks

Beats me, but I'm curious as I run in salt too. Are you using "Salt- Away"..? Or something different? And I never heard of this Castrol degreaser stuff. I will have to look into it.

Isn't the castrol purple stuff coustic? If you get a bit on your finger does it make your skin wrinkle?

Aldo

I use regular degreaser and mix it with "salt away" works for me since years... I dont do it all the time though, like once a month...
I do go out on the boat everyother day - flush it every week -religiously and use the mixture once a month. An old friend from the marina told me this stuff.

Dunaruna -- It does wrinkle the ole finger tips ... but not any faster than warm water (and I don't think that makes something "caustic" ... "caustic" implies a strongish acid or alkali)

Maybe caustic was the wrong description - my bad.

I use a castrol degreaser which is purple, it great stuff but it is very powerful. Makes my skin wrinkle badly and if its not diluted enough it turns some alloys powdery. It probably different to what you are using.

Aldo

Pete,

If it is the same stuff its not doing your water pump seal any good. The description on the bottle says 'harmful to paint & rubber'. If its the same stuff.

Aldo
