So now that my boat is all fixed after replacing the starter - I took her out a few times this weekend. I didnt want to flush her until i knew how. I have earmuffs, and i can feel where the inlets are, but with outboards i usually put the muffs on in the direction of the bow to the stern.

With a i/o, i cant reach the bottom of the motor to do this, so it looks like i have to put it on from the back to the front... but wont the metal peice holding the muffs together hit the prop when running?

How long should i flush it for also?

Re: Flushing question

If you don't put it in gear when you are flushing the prop shouldn't be an issue.
Can't you put it on from the front?

Re: Flushing question

You can put the muffs on anyway it is easiest for you.I recommend pushing an ice pick through the center of the muff until it goes in the intake vent to hold the muffs from slipping off or having the prop move it a bit.Dont put it in gear and you will have no problems.Charlie

Re: Flushing question

Make sure they stay on, mine slipped off one day, 210 degrees later I found them at the bottom of the lower unit. You may have a small pair or something, maybe thats why they dont reach from front to back.

Re: Flushing question

I dont get it, 210 degrees? Was the lower unit out of the water completely? In my slip, even with the trim on trailor mode, I cant get the water intake's out of the water. Should they be out of the water?

Re: Flushing question

you should trim up to install them and then trim full down to flush

they sell flushers with a stainless pin that goes through the grates in the lower unit and will keep them in place

tommays

Re: Flushing question

Just flushed her... seemed to keep real cool when on fresh water... I ran for about 10-15 mins.. that should be enough, right?

Re: Flushing question

The key is to flush it as soon as you are done using the boat so the motor has not cooled yet and the tstat is wide open. The flusher that Tommays is referring to requires 2 hands to put it on and may be inconvienient to do.My method can be done with 1 hand in case you need the other hand to hang on to the swim platform while putting it on .Charlie
