Flushing/testing adapter, 1960 Evinrude 40hp Lark II

On a newer Johnson I had, I connected a contraption with two suction cups to the sides of the lower unit and connected that to hose to flush salt water when I got home.

I now have a 40hp Evinrude Lark II, but it looks like the water intake is behind the prop covered by a screen. Is there another way to allow testing/flushing this motor, other than putting it in a garbage can full of water?

Thanks,

Rich

There are a couple of aftermarket contraptions that allowed the use of a hose, but I have no idea how to find any.

The problems with both of the ones that I have seen were (1) that the propeller could not move at all with the device in place; and (2) that there was no way to get water to the secondary input above the A/V plate.

I've attached a couple of pictures of the Tempo fixture that fits a 9.5HP, which has a similar intake. Click the thumbnails to enlarge them:

Rich, There was a flushing adaptor for that motor, at one time. I do not think it is still available.

I think that motor has a grating on the side of the gearcase, just below the antiventilation plate. This is to supply water when the motor is in reverse. On my '58 Fat-Fifty, I used to put some duct tape on the water pickup behing the prop, and remove the grating on the side of the gearcase and use one suction cup from a standard flusher and fit it over the reverse water intake. I do not know if this will work on your big twin however.

The Tempo flushers show up on Ebay from time to time, but usually bring a hefty price.

RJohnson has posted a few times about making your own device. You simply remove the plate held in with 2 screws above the anti cavitation plate, cut out a copy made of plain sheet metal, drill a 1/2" hole, and solder on a female garden hose connector. Simple as that. Another bonus is that it will not fall off suddenly, potentially harming your motor. You will have to cover the main water intake as stated, and ensure that you have sufficient water flow.

Thanks all, I found one at West marine, but they wanted $35 for the simple plate and some springs so I passed on it.

I'll either run the engine in trash can, or make my own for that price.

Thanks again to you all!
