Flushing without running???

Goofy question I know, but how effective is flushing an older motor, 1988 60hp, without running it? I can get water to come out the tell tale if I reach down and apply a little pressure to the flush muffs. I know it's not as good as running it but the reason I ask is I live in a very quiet neighborhood and I know if I run the thing after dark I will upset some neighbors. If I plan to be out the next morning I don't worry about it. But I don't like to leave the thing sitting after a salty run. I live only a couple minutes away from the ramp and the water that first comes out the tell tale is always quite warm still so I know I'm getting fresh water through somewhere, but is this just a waste of time?

Re: Flushing without running???

I'd think the only drawback would be the water won't run through the block, etc. Having said that, it's definitely better than not running it at all and something to do when there's no other options. Running an outboard after dark on muffs in a subdivision is an absolute area of concern depending on where you live. I've lived in places where that would get you either shot or arrested (ok, that's an exaggeration), so what you're saying makes sense. Hang tight though as there'll be some guys weigh in that can answer this a lot better than me.

I have an 89 Johnson 9.9 and live in an apt building so I have to lug it all down the elevator on a dolly and run it outside lol. If I remove the thermostat and just replace the plate will the water completely circulate the block and head with just muffs and not running?

How about a 55 gal barrel or big garbage can filled with water and letting your garden hose run in it when flushing? This may muffel the noise enough.
