I have a 40 hp merc (1981) that was missing at high speeds. It eventually would die at trolling speed, and finally wouldn't start. My plugs were fouling all the time.
I found the problem last night: My stator had some how overheated and swelled, causing it to interfere with my flywheel. Somehow the stator won and my flywheel magnet was disintegrated because it was rubbing on the stator. My problem: what would cause a stator to swell in the first place (it ran for 27 years without causing a problem)?....and what are my options concerning the flywheel. Can I replace the magnet alone, or do I need to order the flywheel as a whole? I am having alot of trouble finding a flywheel for a motor from '81.
