Flywheel Area

Is it possible for something to get into the flywheel enclosure area? 1993 5.7 Mercruiser. Engine is "tight", starter sometimes turns the flywheel, then almost seems to catch and have problems. Flywheel of course entirely surrounded by "shroud", can only see teeth when I pull the starter. Lot's of grease in that little opening and did pull out some small debris including fish scales! (I have no idea) Can't turn engine by hand, even with plugs out, to see all the teeth. So, is it possible something could be in that flywheel enclosure (shroud?) area and jamming it up? Is the only way to access that area to pull the motor? Thanks in advance.

Re: Flywheel Area

Pull the outdrive and see if the problem still occures. Could be the drive having the problem.
Could also be a core plug on the back of the block blowed out because it wasn't winterized properly.

Can't turn engine by hand,

Pull the engine, take it apart and find out why.

Pulled the outdrive already. And shroud....enclosure.....I'm obviously talking about the flywheel housing (correct terminology!) I looked at the parts picture and am just simply wondering (curious) if it's possible for something to get in there, and if so, don't see how it would get out.

If you have the flywheel cover off, pull the flywheel and see if anything is behind it. It's on 6 bolts.

Are you sure it was winterized properly? Try probing into the sparkplug holes with a wooded dowel. If you find a rusty end on the dowel it`s time to pull the head.
