Anyone with some words of wisdom out there on pulling a frozen flywheel? It's not as though I haven't pulled off a few flywheels over the years!!! But I've never seen one stick like this. I have a 1977 Johnson 55 hp. that we're going to change the rings on. However we can't get past the flywheel. We've tried heating it, liquid wrench etc...... No luck. We've already sheared two bolts on our puller with the torque we've applied......... Any ideas?????

Thanks
Steve

Re: flywheel frozen

I just got mine off a '61 40hp. Started last Friday afternoon. Torqued the puller as tight as I could. Even used a double wrench to really crank on it. Sprayed lube on it and gave it a decent tap or two on the puller screw. Then let it sit. Came back every now and then to give the puller another 1/4 turn or so. Did the same thing Saturday, all day. I did tap the edge with a wooden mallet before and after each torquing. (I didn't want to use any heat cuz that would misalign the molecules and kill the magnetism.) Continued with the same procedure till late Sunday afternoon when she finally broke free. Good thing I'm patient.

Sometimes patience is the key.

I dont like using heat either personally. You need grade 8 bolts for your puller if you havent already upgraded them

Yea, it seems patience was the the key. I use to just get the biggest persuader I had and went to town. Guess it comes with age ... and having a lot of time on your hands. You're right about the bolts. Luckily, I had some grade 9s floating around. I wouldn't even wanna try the 2s from the local hardware stores.

If you are breaking those hardened bolts. that sucker must really be on there. Makes me suspect some yay-hoo has locktited it on. If that is true, good luck.

F.R. You called it! There was locktite all over it! We finally got a hydraulic puller. Don't know what the PSI was when it finally broke loose, but WOW, I've never seen a flywheel pop like that............ Must have gone 4 feet into thr air. Our good luck when it landed in a box of rags next to the stand!!!
