flywheel & ignition coils damage

Hi all I have a 1966 40 hp Johnson supersea horse and after pulling the flywheel found damage to the inside of the flywheel and both ignition coils. Replaced both coils and corrected unbalanced wobble plate under the armature (special thanks to Paul Moir). Problem is there still appears to be contact between the flywheel and the coils. I need to obtain a torque wrench to torque to spec. I believe it is 45 foot pounds but not sure. Other problem is plugwire assembly appears to be getting stuck on FAST range once engaged. Works fine with flywheel off but once flywheel is on sticks. Just replaced coils and ignition safety switch and do not want to risk damaging them with flywheel. Any ideas?

Do you have your coils sticking out too far? I mean, are they proud of the bosses they sit on? Make sure your wiring is tucked in really well too, as there's not much room for it.

The armature plate will tend to stick when the flywheel isn't rotating due to the magnets in it. Try turning the flywheel and see if it still sticks.

The flywheel torque is every bit of 105 ft/lbs.

The coils sit on "bosses" that stick out from the magneto plate. If you look at the outward face of those bosses, you'll see they're machined smooth. The ignition coils must be set carefully so they're alinged with those machined faces. I can put up a picture tommorow if you like.

Paul, I am also curious of exactly how i set the points as I have never done this before. I have ordered a seloc manual but it will be a week before i get it. There is also a scored (pitted) area on the inside of the flywheel from where the damage occured app. 1/8" deep do I need to be concerned about this?

There is a slight bevel at the extreme top of the aluminum seat that the coils sit upon. The vertical edge of the coil yokes must align with the inside edge of those bevels to obtain the proper clearance from the flywheel magnets.

The flywheel nut torque is 105 foot pounds.

Points can be set by aligning the flywheel key with the fiber rubbing portion of the points, then set the points where a .020 feeler gauge will pass thru but a .022 will not.
