We are putting my Johnson 40 HP 1990 model back together after replacing a burnt piston. When we removed the flywheel, we noticed it had been rubbing the ignition component. There was evidence where the flywheel had been rubbing the plastic. I sanded the flywheel inner surfaces to clean. When replacing the flywheel, it is binding against the ignition and the ignition system doesnt operate smoothly. Is there some way to check the flywheel for being out of round? Should the suspect be the ignition and if so, what and how do you check? The ignition operates smoothly when the flywheel is not attached. We have lived in the repair manual and had our hopes up nearing completion only to run into this problem. Anyone with experience on this?
Thank you.

Sandman.... Keep in mind that even if there is proper clearance between the ignition components and the flywheel, you will notice a binding of sorts due to the fact that you are moving metal (steel) parts of the driver coil assy etc past the strong flywheel magnets.

However, I have encountered the problem you're speaking of a few times due to improper adjustments of the components. Look closely at where the components sit on the aluminum armature plate. The very top of the aluminum surface will have a slight bevel where the driver coil etc sits upon it. The vertical section of the ignition component must be aligned with the top of that bevel. If it is out beyond that bevel, it stands the danger of being hit by the flywheel magnets.

AS Joe stated, make sure all the components are adjusted properly. There are minute adjustments with most triggers and other components ,by holding them inward, while torguing them down. If you are sure they are as adjusted as possable, check the upper crank bearing for any sign of play.

Thanks for your thoughts. We readjusted the ignition componets and it helped a great deal. I appreciate your input.
