Hello, Im new to the this board but everyone seems very helpful. My problem is my flywheel will not turn at all,was working fine then went to crank the motor and now it's stuck(pulled plugs out also)? Just from reading on here it sounds like it's either
in the powerhead or lowerunit ,does this mean I will have to replace one or the other or could it be something more simple and less costly ?? I have not dropped the lower unit yet .The motor is a 1985 johnson 90hp vro, the vro has been disconnected. Thanks for any opinions.

could be debis caught under flywheel. pull flywheel with a puller and take a look, could be a cheap fix

There is no way to give the magic answer by long distance. Was it sitting awhile between when it was last ran ane when you found it jammed? Or did it lock up while running? Is there water in the lower unit? Can you move the flywheel at all...even a tiny bit?

Re: Flywheel Jam ?

Let's check the obvious stuff first...

The starter isn't worn and allowing the bendix gear to jam into the flywheel, is it? A loose bolt from somewhere else didn't get sucked into the flywheel magnets, did it?

As was asked earlier, can you move the flywheel AT ALL. ANY movement at all? If it is completely immobile, then you may have a locked up powerhead. Remove the spark plugs and look for rust, water or impact damage. If you get some movement of the flywheel, it may be the lower unit. Drain the lower unit oil and look for water, metal filings, metal chunks.

Thanks for your reply ,In my original post I stated I pulled the plugs and in my reply I said I cannot budge it ( flywheel ) at all ( not even a little ) , the plugs look good with no rust or damage .I will drain the lower unit asap to check for water or metal .Im not sure where the flywheel magnets are located but I have not checked to locate them either .The bendix engages the flywheel fine .Thanks Randy

Re: Flywheel Jam ?

Hi Randy,
It is possible that if the gears went out of the unit that they may have pushed the driveshaft up into the crankshaft enough to bind things up enough to give you zero movement on the crank.
Next step, if you rule out the lower unit, would be to pull the cylinder heads and take a peek. Try moving the pistons side to side. There should be a little play to them.
The flywheel magnets are on the inside of the outer ring, cast in place.

Re: Flywheel Jam ?

I have a motor that was missing the inspection hole cover on the flywheel and a piece broke off the starter ratchet and fell in there and got intermittently stuck. On another engine a piece of the engine case broke off and got jammed in the points. It could be anything.
