I have read a few posts here about the key being sheared on the flywheels..now my question is..if you had a 25 year old motor....would it be a good maintance procedure to replace it and re torque the fly wheel..do the keys lose any strength with age....like some metals do under stress and age...

Or is the concensus if it ain't broke leave it...

No I would leave well enough alone. Never a bad idea to check it when you have the flywheel off though. I think they seldom need replacing. Best of luck. Rick.

There is absolutely no excuse for a flywheel key ever shearing. If one shears, it is the fault of the guy that assembled it incorrectly. So it right and it will never shear in a hundred years.

Remember, the key does not hold the flywheel in place. The key locates the flywheel on the crank. The flywheel is held in place because of the taper on the crank and flywheel and the torque of the nut.

Won't hurt to take it off, just put it back on right. I think it's a good idea to inspect working parts for wear and lube what is in need.
