I have a 1987 Mercury 70 hp outboard. All the outer magnets have come off the flywheel and fallen onto the top part of the motor. I removed the flywheel. Can I just replace the magnets or do I need to get a whole new flywheel? How are the magnets attached anyway?
Thanks for your help.

Claudezzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Re: Flywheel magnets

They're bonded...in other words, glued. I've simply epoxied them back on with good success. The surfaces have to be absolutely clean. Then a coating of 5-minute epoxy. No need for clamping, just let the magnets hold themselves in place. Try to get them in the same places they were and keep reasomably consistant spacing between them. Make sure none are upside down. When in doubt, any two adjacent magnets should attract. If any two repel, one is upside down. If the center magnet is loose as well, chuck it and get a new one.

Re: Flywheel magnets

Aloha Willy. Thanks for the quick and informative reply. Unfortunately they were all broken or out of place, so I don't really know how many I need and what the spacing between should be. Do you know if a set of magnets can be purchased, and if so, from where? The Flywheel is in good shape otherwise, so it would be really cool if I could just change the magnets.

Claudezzzzzzzzzzz

Re: Flywheel magnets

You can get a kit for rebuilding them. I don't know what all is included but it would be worth checking in to. I believe the kits run about 50 bucks.

Aloha Bill. Thanks for the reply. I am unable to locate anyone who has these kits. Can you point me in the right direction? A new flywheel will set me back over $300.
