So I have been fighting a fuel issue for a little while now and as I read i find that the magnets can cause problems to. My question is what is the reason for these magnets and what do they really do. I will be pulling the flywheel off today after work and checking them out. What shoud i be looking for? I do know that I can look under the flywheel and move some kind of magnets that are around some copper coils is this them? Sorry just getting to know this engine as I am a diesel tech lol. Thanks

Re: Flywheel magnets

The outter ring magnets supply/make the power for the charging and the ignition systems. The center ring magnet on flywheel hub are for firing the cylinders. DO NOT USE a air impact to remove or install flywheel as this is how magnets get loose/broken

Re: Flywheel magnets

Thanks for the info. So if anything is wrong with these could it be causing my low power issue? Any tips on how to get this flywheel off? I should have all the tools and puller in my service truck to do it.

Re: Flywheel magnets

When I needed to get my flywheel off I took out a spark plug and put a ton of small cotton rope in the cylinder until it couldn't stroke then used a ratchet to take the nut off.

Re: Flywheel magnets

Did you say you could actually move the magnets. They should be stationary, glued in place.

You are a creative man.

I can move the ones around the charging coils. I belive the engine got hot at one point I'm pretty sure the glue on the ones under the flywheel are gone

They'll probably fall out when you pull the flywheel

Re: Flywheel magnets

You can get kits and instructions from BRP on how to re-glue them. The over heat didn't cause it. It was a poor manufacturing process.

Re: Flywheel magnets

Most flywheels have the magnets cast into the outer edge of the flywheel. On these 35 amp (vented) flywheels, they are glued (epoxied) to the outer edge. Not unusual for the outer magnets on these 35 amp alternator flywheels to loosen with age. They can be re-glued with a kit from Bombardier. They make two kits. magnet glue only: 1. called an adhesive kit, part number 431929. Pretty inexpensive. 2. Magnet replacement kit, part number 584304. Includes new magnets as well as the adhesive. Also not too expensive.

Thanks for all the great info. I will try to get that flywheel off today. Also I checked them timing last night and all i could read was no2 cylinder timing? Is there something that im doing wrong here?

Re: Flywheel magnets

If the magnets are loose as you stated, I'd suggest you fix them first before running it anymore before you tear up something.

Re: Flywheel magnets

You can use the flywheel timing marks for #2 and the #2 plugwire. #1 should provide timing information also-any chance the plug is not firing? You should get a flash from the timing gun if the plugwire is conducting properly. The factory will say that you set the timing by using both #1 and #2 cyls. That you set it for whichever one reads the highest degrees. You should get a pretty good idea where you are with only #2.

Re: Flywheel magnets

The copper coils under the flywheel, you spoke of in first post should not move. They are part of the stator, if they move, it wears the insulation off of the copper wires, then short, then no/low output.

Re: Flywheel magnets

Thanks for all the great info. I will check the spark on no1 if I use the no2 wire should I set it at what it calls for on the air box? My engine calls for 34btdc so I should shoot for getting it around 32 correct? thanks

Re: Flywheel magnets

Timing should be retarded app 4 degrees and run 89/91 grade fuel. Service bulletin explains this in detail. This engine if up to spec makes a lot of horsepower.
