flywheel play 50 hp johnson

fly wheel has a lot of side play which produces a knocking noise and engine is very very noisy when running but doesn't knock. Is this from the lower or upper bearing being bad.If it's the upper bearing can it be replaced with out removing the powerhead? Motor is a 1886. <br />I have a good 60 Hp 1989 will this fit? <br /> Thanks for the help.

Tom.... Seeing as how the engine is 118 years old, you may have a problem getting parts for it (grin)... couldn't resist.<br /><br />If the play is so bad that the engine actually knocks when you rock it, it should be replaced if you intend to keep the engine. It doesn't matter if the play is due to the upper or lower main bearing, the powerhead must be removed and dismantlled in order to replace either one.
