Today, my dad and I tried to take the flywheel off of my 1972 Evinrude 9.5. After finally breaking loose the flywheel nut, we put a flywheel puller on the flywheel but it would not budge. I put a good bit of pressure on it, but didn't want to break something so I loosened it up. We tapped on the flywheel and puller but it would just not budge. Is there something I'm forgetting to do? Thanks

Brent

Re: flywheel problems

install the puller GOOD and TIGHT. Get a heavy hammer and give a GOOD hit on the end of the puller shank. (leave the crank nut on a few turns to prevent the flywheel from jumping off..)
Do not hit the flywheel!!! :)

Re: flywheel problems

Been there...
There are many kinds of flywheel pullers. Only one kind will do the job. I can't explain exactly what it looks like, but it had three bolts that goes to the three treaded holes in the flywheel.
I put my 1965 Johnson 6 HP in my car and stoped by my OMC shop and borrowed their flywheel puller. Costs about a big thank you and a smile.

Good luck!

/Bear

Re: flywheel problems

Hi Brent
Install puller, give it as much presure as you dare, maybe just a little more. Then give it a solid smack with a med. hvy. hammer. tighten your puller a little more, then smack. please note, that these smacks are delibert and aimed. Were not trying to beat the thing. It will come sooner or later.

Re: flywheel problems

Make sure you don't have the kind of flywheel the unbolts. You won't pull this type off no matter what. It is characterized by about 10 bolts in a circle on top of your flywheel.

they can be a bear, but a good rap on the end with a lot of force usually does it.

Re: flywheel problems

Also known as a harmonic balancer puller. You'll probably break a puller bolt before you damage the flywheel
