Flywheel Puller

Went to get a flywheel puller at the auto parts store and couldn't find one small enough at a couple places to fit the flywheel on this 1976 15HP Johnson. Can anybody tell me who might carry one small enough to fit this motor? I am trying to avoid chasing all over town looking for one that fits.

Thank you,

Dave

Re: Flywheel Puller

FnA - I bought a "harmonizing pulley puller" and used it for everything. A VW, A 225 looper, a 5 HP Nissan.

Improvise!

Buy the main harmonizing puller, then buy a bunch of smaller bolts, nuts, and washers. The main component of the puller is slotted. This means that, with the help of washers and long bolts, you are able to slip any "pulling mechanism" into the works and make it happen.

(Engineeringspeak: Pulling Mechanism is anything you need to actually provide tensile force against the material you're trying to work. )

Don t forget it will also pull those carrier bearings as well. I have wore two or three of them out and still haven't pulled a harmonic balancer.

It's strongly advised to NOT pull the flywheel using a puller that grabs it under the edges. Use a harmonic balancer puller. Get 3 grade 8 bolts from the hardware that fit.

Re: Flywheel Puller

The "harmonizing" part of the description: Like "harmony." They work as a chorus, spreading the force -- nearly tons of force -- in harmony over the multiple points.

A gear puller jerks the force over a fraction of a square inch. Imagine a ton of force over 1/4 in^2. That 8000 psi. No casting will tolerate this.

No puller, sir.

Those #8's: Excellent advice. I learned this at iBoats. In a huge pinch, you *could* cheat and use gobs of stainless washers on a cheap zinc plated bolt and stuff. Don't expect to use them more than once, however.

When I need a special tool, I go to Autozone. You can borrow them for a small fee, refunded when returned. OR you can keep them as long as you like. They have a lifetime warranty.... Works very well. I have even taken them back after a few years and got the refund.

Might check with them...

Re: Flywheel Puller

Gentlemen,

Thank you for the information on the number 8 bolts. My problem is I haven't been able to find a small enough harmonic balaancer with Y-slots small enough to get the bolts close enough together so I won't be placing any sideways force on the bolt holes.

In other words, I need a harmonic balancer small enough to fit the holes on this motor's flywheel. I'm trying to find out what size I need and what auto parts store is likely to have it.

You can make your own out of half-inch thick steel plate. I did and used it to pull the flywheel on my 1962 Johnson 75hp V-4. Make a cardboard template first and drill the holes slightly oversize to allow alignment. Instead of tapping the center hole, I used a nut and washer below the plate so I could put a wrench on it. Grade 8 bolts are the best choice.
