Hi,
Im trying to pull the flywheel on a 1982 60Hp
The puller comes with a removable tip.
Is it best i put that tip on, does that somehow increase the operational aspects of it?

Re: Flywheel pulling

the tip should have a point on it, that will fit into the dimple on the crankshaft end. without it the puller can "walk" off the crankshaft and cause damage . ( you arent using a gear puller?!....right?)

Re: Flywheel pulling

I like to leave the nut on just slightly loose from flush with the top of the crank threads. Protects the crank, keeps the puller from walking, and keeps the flywheel in place when she pops. I have seen some jump a couple feet in the air!

Re: Flywheel pulling

Hi Captain.
Im pretty sure its the right puller. Heres a photo. I had it on with the three small length screws but it stripped the threads on the bottom of the puller so i have put on the longer screws and can therefore use the tip and get full purchase on the threads further up the puller shaft.
PS they only gave me two long HT bolts so im off to find another
Ive had it sitting with penetrating oil, but im not keen to try heat as i suppose it could damage the stator.

Re: Flywheel pulling

Be sure to use grade 8 bolts. The cheapo bolts that come with the kit usually break.

Also, thread the bolts into the flywheel 7/16", no more, no less. Any less and you will strip the threads, and more and you will potentially thread into a coil or the like. I either use the proper shoulder bolts, mark the grade 8 bolt threads with a sharpie, or install heat shrink tubing over all the threads but 7/16". Just so you know how far to thread them in.

While tightening, lift UP on the flywheel, and give the puller bolt a sharp rap with a hammer. (Sharp rap, not bash with a sledge hammer!)

The impact will usually pop the flywheel free. If not, keep tightening. May need an extension on the handle of the wrench on the puller bolt to get leverage.

Re: Flywheel pulling

right puller, but it looks like you are using the bolts that came with the puller. upgrade those bolts to grade 8. when the fly wheel pops, its not the bolts you need to be weary of....its the flywheel itself , as they can pop off with extreme force!!

Re: Flywheel pulling

Thanks High trim and NWCove , the thought of a ht bolt snapping off in the flywheel is enough to make me get this done according to best practice as close as possible. Il check the grade on the bolts supplied and if they arent grade 8 which it seems they arent i will find at least a grade 8 replacement

Re: Flywheel pulling

None of the local marine shops had HT bolts so i rung up a local boat mechanic, he said he would whip it off for me for a few dollars. So i took it there and he put on his puller and hit it with a impact wrench again and again, it didnt budge. He kept on trying a few different things such as putting washers on the puller and taping the puller and he then started saying this is really unusual.
He looked a bit concerned at the force going on to remove it and started leaning away.

He ended up putting heat on it (gas torch) while the puller was on and tapping it hard and it came off- with a broken woodruff key.
On the top of the stator it looks like there is a bit of fabric or something that has pulled back, could this cause a short? It feels almost like cotton.
Should i insulate it there somehow? Epoxy? IMG_2092.jpg

Re: Flywheel pulling

Ive resealed the crankcase to make sure of no leaks and ive epoxied over the place where the bare white thing was on the stator. It runs fine now on the bench at least. I still need to replace the suspect headgasket.
I have however broken the replacement flywheel key, i used about 40 foot pound which i think was far too low.
Can someone please tell me the torque required for this flywheel nut?
