Can't seem to get flywheel off. Have correct tools. How much force is safe? If you have diagram please send.

Re: Flywheel removal of 40hp 1963 Evinrude

just a little more force than you think you should put on it....

Rap the top of the flywheel puller shaft a couple of times, and crank it down some more. Sooner or later it will pop, and you will initially think something broke. (Make sure the puller bolts are inserted the same length -- i.e., that the puller is parallel to the flywheel.)

By the way, when you reinstall make sure you have it tightened down real tight. I had a '61 Evinrude 40, and sheared a couple of keys before I went out an bought a torque wrench and tightened it down a whole lot more than I had been doing before. It's sort of like pulling the flywheel. You end up putting more muscle to it than you think you should.
