Ok, I have seen several other questions on here regarding this process and the tools needed. I didnt know until I tried, and thought I might save someone else some time/money. I had a broken timing belt, which is why i pulled the flywheel. I saw several posts suggesting you need a special Merc flywheel tool. I couldnt see why I would need to, and A steering wheel puller worked handily. I tightened this one up and gave it a couple of light taps with the hammer and it popped off with ease. This is a pic of the puller on my parts motor. The two "jaws" locked under the outside edges on the flywheel.
Also attached, a picture of two types of pullers, the one I used and one used for pulling gears/harmonic balancers. My flywheel bolts werent long enough to use the one on the right, and I could only find 2 (as opposed to 3) in my bold bin that would work for it. Also pictured is the culprit of my problems, the broken belt. I'll try and keep posting pics along as I work on this thing. I know I will have plenty of questions of my own.
